What's the real situation with places like YouTube which carry "HTML5"
video? They seem to say my Opera 11.62 supports HTML5, but their
videos won't start. I just get a progress indicator forever.

I'm on 64-bit Debian stable. Is there some codec package I should
install? (I refuse to install Adobe Flash or any other non-free
software; I make an exception for Opera.)

Only the videos "with WebM transcodes" will work with Opera's HTML5
facility (likewise Firefox's); I think many are lacking that. According
to my Download preferences in Opera, webm files are played using
"gecko-mediaplayer" (formerly known as "mplayerplug-in"), which Opera
detected automatically.

(Opera 11.64, Arch Linux, i686).

Oh, that's interesting. I didn't know about "gecko-mediaplayer" and as
far as I can recall it's not in the Opera Debian package's
Recommended: section, so there was no easy way for me to find out.
I will try it tonight.

Installed gecko-mediaplayer, but still nothing. Various HTML5 Video
demos also show up blank. Oh well. I don't have the patience to do any
detailed detective work right now, so this will have to wait.

You're probably missing the VP8 codec ("libvpx").
