UptoDate Opera without Update Manager
(too old to reply)

I run Ubuntu 10.04 as a dual-boot with Windows,
and I use Ubuntu the Update Manager to notify me
of new updates and to download and install them.
The updates for Opera, though, are always way past
being current. How does one avoid conflicts with the
Update Manager if one just goes ahead and updates
Opera without using the Update Manager?

IIRC is three a special repository to be found on opera.com. If you add
this to your apt.sources then you should get updates in time.

If you want to stop the Ubuntu package management system from trying to
update Opera, use it to un-install Opera (so that it thinks Opera isn't
installed at all) and then download the tarball from
<http://www.opera.com/download/> and follow the instructions.

Un-installing the Debian/Ubuntu package shouldn't touch your ~/.opera*
directories, and the tarball installation should pick them up
automatically.

That's what works for me on Mandriva, anyway!

Thanks for the reply. I removed "opera" from the list in
Package Manager, and then I downloaded the default debian
file for Ubuntu from Opera.com, and then I double-clicked
on the file. Ta da! Opera v.11.60 is installed and running.
It will be a manual update from now on for Opera, but I can
handle it. :-)
