Discussion:
Opera for PowerPC?
(too old to reply)

Just to confirm what I'm seeing: there is no Opera 11 for
Linux/PowerPC, right? No beta, unofficial or experimental versions
hidden away somewhere on ftp.opera.no?

(We bought an old Mac for Mom last Christmas and set it up with Linux,
but I didn't think of this aspect. So she's running 10.6x now.)

To my understanding they stopped building for the PowerPC a while ago to
consolidate efforts.

This isn't Mac. It's PC. It has "intel inside".

There was. It was stopped with Opera 10.x :-(
Once Apple announced the end of PowerPC based Macs, Opera dropped support.

What are you refering to? Mom's Mac is ppc-based, unless you know
more about it than I do.

BTW, Opera 10.63 runs on that machine, but is unstable and crashes
frequently. So she also runs Firefox.

LinuxPPC seems to have been discontinued twelve years ago, so it's
unlikely that recent versions of anything will run reliably on it.

Yellow Dog Linux is still maintained, and may be suitable for your
hardware <http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/hardware/>.

I don't know why Opera requires x86 compatible hardware; other browsers
don't mention that as a requirement. Midori is a nice alternative to
Opera.

You're referring to Linux distributions? I have no problems there;
Debian has excellent ppc support which is not going away anytime soon.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding here. When I wrote "Linux/PowerPC"
many months ago, I wasn't referring to a Linux distribution by that
name, just "any decent Linux running on a PowerPC machine, such as
older Macs".
