Is it possible to configure the Opera mail client to check Linux system
mail? Some other email clients, such as Evolution, allow this, and it's
one of the very few features I miss now that I've made Opera my mail
client.

I've searched this NG, Opera's web forums, and the web, but have been
unable to find an answer.

I don't use opera as an email client, so I don't know the direct
answer. But considered setting up an imap server to access the local
mail store? dovecot is very easy to set up as an imap server, and I
did that for my simple text based email client because imap is so
superior to local email access (allows multiple concurrent
connections, is more reliable regarding locking access, can be
configured to use Maildir stores rather than MBOX, so is easier to
back up, etc).
